Okay,I've known her for over 20 years and we have been though much together...we have many beliefs and values that are similar and some that are in exact opposition. We usually get along and have a great time, but then sometimes, we argue and it can become intense...politics is what does it...In my opinion, somewhere she took a strange turn in her life...fell on her head or something... I believe in Christ and God and she believes in God...
I think Obama is the worst president. And she likes him. I think Obama's healthcare is socialism and she likes it.
Recently, on a hot summer day, we had lunch at an excellent Italian restaurant in Plano, called Isabella's. I highly recommend it. My liberal friend and I have always enjoyed eating and cooking together.
We shared pasta, a veggie sandwiche, and an exquisite apple tarte for dessert... while we caught up on what's going on in our lives and the world...
Talk, fun, eating, talk, fun, eating...
Then....
The topic turns to politics!
My face pretty much says it all...
Do you think conservatives and liberals have difficulty maintaining friendships? I didn't realize that she and I were so different in this area, until Obama appeared on the scene.

I agree Jan.. I just listen.. then after they are finished add my opinion.. this woman listens and we can discuss, but at times, the comments that come out of her mouth amazes me that I even know her.. or perhaps really don't know her.

Well it's all in the raisin'...and if you're raised around that...and go to college around that..it's pretty well engrained after that....I think your life has to be an example of the "other side"...and that's the best way to effect change

I've stop several relationships due to the liberal thinking. My husband is a physician and when I found out they thought my husband should work for the government and be told how to practice medicine, and work multiple hours but not get paid for it - we were done! It's socialism and I want no part of it.

No, I'm afraid not. At least for us. My daughter passed away 2005 and her husband is very Liberal. We have tried to keep in touch , having dinner every so often, but he's always been difficult to have a conversation with any way. He's an intravert. He has alway been happy when I call and say lets have dinner, but we have a hard time keeping the conversation going. We love to talk about politics and all that is going on, but we steer away from politics.Its been a year an a half and I keep telling him we will get together soon. Its almost a chore. All our friends are conservative republicans, one of my best friends's son Brent had lunch with John Boehner last fall. SO, no,we find it hard to be around people who are Liberal.With the way things are today, I am surprised you still maintain that friendship.

I have several liberal friends, but we don't hang out very often. And when we do hang out, we do not talk politics. I believe as a Christian Conservative, I should show love to these people even though they are "lost". You never know when God might touch their hearts and give them a new direction!

I came close to marrying a liberal a couple of times. Both were ok alone and became obnoxious when with other liberals. I would stand up to her friends and let them know if they wanted to push their will on others they could as long as they were willing to fight. In the end I knew that it would never work out because of the difference in the way we see things. Even today I have to deal with people thinking I'm liberal. I think It is because I live like it is still the 60s and 70s. I saw that period though as the rise of Libertarianism not liberalism.

LOL! Sure we are still talking... But we are so different in basic beliefs that we can't talk about certain things.. She smokes... and I hate it.. and she is like a flower child but very focused on money for herself.. just a total distortion in my eyes.. she is an interesting person on some levels and I have known her a long time..but as time goes on only see her every so often.. Basically I don't think a liberal and a conservative can be 'good' friends we are too different..
So how can we bring Muslims etc. into our Christian nation and everyone get along. If after 20 years of knowning one another by the end of the lunch I am ready to get away. Like kind, likes kind... you can't force people of differences to interact for long..without conflict.

I know what you mean. We have to be vigilant of ourselves and how we refer to people. I too, have the innate initial impulse to want to use pejoratives and condescending descriptive language. However, conservativism is considered to be a philosophical bent noted for discipline. We ought be mindful of this when addressing others we perceive as liberals. Let them use the descriptive language and labelling.

I was told the other day that now that I am a conservative (Constitutionalist) that I am against women!! Uh-huh, and the Earth is FLAT too!! Great article, Ann!! My Mom & best friend thinks Obama is the best thing to happen since JFK ... she is having a hard time that I am conservative now, former LIB, my mom is ultra liberal. There isn't one thing I like about him .... so, we don't talk about politics except when it accidently comes up. I did get her to see thru the lies about Palin, though!! I felt sooooo good about that!!

It has torn my family apart. Before Obama it wasn't so bad, but now we don't even spend the holidays together. I just can't understand their thinking. I think it may be a left brain, right brain thing. At least that is what I tell myself. They are also not Christians...Maybe that is it. Obama has turned our lives upside down. It is hard & very sad!!!

Excellent blog subject, Ann. You are always so on it. I think we can remain 'friends' with anyone if there is some commonality. But deep friends with a liberal would be a reach. They have no idea who they are or what they really think. They are brainwashed and led and manipulated so that does not make a good friend. Observe a group of liberals. Their logic is twisted. Like someone else said lead by your life as an example and I am sure that yours is, Ann.

The majority of my family are liberals from the east coast...my parents are the black sheep and outta me and my siblings I am the only one who has an interest in the political world. I attempt to enlighten them but they wear blinders. On the few occasions they have complained bout the state of our country, I tell them they have no room to complain as they do nothing to make a change.... and I am the youngest.

Same here. We try not to go near politics, but not always successful! My other two sisters are conservatives like myself. My liberal sister got that way after she had married a far leftist, who happens to be a multi millionaire...go figure.... Get this, both her son and daughter are gun toting conservatives! Her son was in the USMC special forces...Force Recon 1. Served two tours in Iraq, and two in Afganistan! Her daughter is highly skilled in the Arts of hand to hand combat, and swords!!

Maybe they have so many other personal issues in their life involving issues on a larger scale is more than they can handle. I am fine with that but don't complain and act like a victim. I have ZERO tolerance for people who behave like that.

Ann, being friends with liberals requires a tremendous effort and strain on the friendship. The two parties would have to agree to never discuss politics, government, abortion, taxes,religion, and so many other issues related to our core values. So, my question is why would I want to be friends with a liberal? Life is difficult enough already...so why add liberals in to the mix?

It depends on your definition of "friend." If you define a friend as a person you hang out with, then sure you can. But if you define a friend as a person with whom you share values and have bonded because of your commonality, everything a liberal stands for will be offensive to you as a conservative, and you cannot be a friend to that which offends you.

Yes. If I got rid of everyone that didn't agree with me politically, I'd have a lot fewer friends. Politics is not the only basis for friendship. I'd be pretty hard core if everybody had to pass some sort of political litmus test to be my friend.

Politics permeates all aspects of our lives, Shawn. Maintaining a friendship with someone who is diametrically opposed to your views is highly unlikely, and quite frankly, makes no sense!
I'm a tenacious man, and so I've spent years trying to talk with liberals. The end result is always the same: frustration, anger, and blood shooting from my eyes! My attitude today is, Fu*k em!!!

Even though I am an Independent conservative, I do argue with my liberal friends. Lets me know what they are thinking but I do tell them with FACTS that they are way wrong about most things. Of course, they get mad but in a day or so they come back for more. LOL

I think you can be friends of sorts but not truly because there are such basic differences that are becoming more and more apparent. Many are turning against what Obama is doing as they wake-up but those that aren't are brainwashed and brain dead or just holding on to prove that they are or were correct.. when they know deep down that they are wrong and that Obama is clearly trying to destroy our country.

Ann, We can always hope. But I do not base my friendships on those who believe solely like I do either in religion or politics. It is the ones who seem intent on being insulting and name calling that I send on their way. You are right... they do not comprehend because they believe so much in their ideology even when you give them the facts. I have a hard line liberal as a fb friend and we are always arguing about something. I usually can bring him down so it makes me think that some liberals do just to have a controversy and keep it going. Gotta love them though even if we disagree on most things.

Yes they can. It makes life interesting. But there are boundaries and lines neither should cross. You can agree to disagree but remember your moral standards and principles. Your arguments need to true and based on facts not emotions. This is where liberals turn ugly and stomp away.

I think most liberal men were bottle fed not breast fed. As a psychiatric nurse you can usually tell. They feel that they were deprived and the world owes them something. I have yet to find a masculine democrat except for maybe Rachal Marrow, Hillary Clinton or Michele Obama. Most liberal men are not gentlemen. They want women to take care of them if not women then the government tit.

That is an easy way to get power and control and turn equal justice into social justice. From social justice to loss of rights. From loss of rights to loss of freedom and independence to an enslaved society. It doesn't take much. So the moral of the story don't sell out your rights freedoms or independence for a free ride. Take your hits in life learn from them and carry on but don't sell out cheap.

I believe this mentality Obama mentality is not based on race or economic status it's a belief I know plenty of rich white democratic lawyers that feel they are entitled to one third of someones misery at the expense of a professionals in...surance limits. Politicians that need votes and whore out entitlements for those votes. Colleges an universities that use entitlements for their agendas. Unions that are so corrupt and power hungry that they take over businesses. But the winner of corruption intolerance and destruction of freedom without a doubt is the liberal progressive administration which is holding this country hostage.

Me too. I have never seen this nation so divided and angry. It does not serve anyone well. If people understood history and current events they would realize approximately one million Americans died in the civil war to keep this country together with the moral motivation that all men are created equal. Also if things are so bad here there are 24 countries that still practice slavery today little do Americans realize it is the republic that protects minorities democracy is mob rule without a republic. Again liberals want to rewrite history and select what suits their agenda in the media.

And if I were about to date someone, clearly I would inquire about her politics. When I have to be in those stuffy meetings with my liberal female colleagues, I do get that 'dikes in prison' kinda vibe. I will say I don't have any friends that are liberals, the ones I know are not friends just acquaintances. We know where we stand with one another and we agree to disagree. They like to make their little snide comments when were in mixed crowds, I just smile and ignore their comments, which gets them even more because I don't take their bait.

well we have an spoken rule to not talk politics in mixed company... i truly found out who they were when spouting off about odamamacare and they spoke up for it... as for now that everything is happening...welll we still don't talk. one came sputtering in muttering things about the local gov. that sounded like something i wuld say... i told her she might want to consder voting rep. next time. she looked at me and asked why. i told her she sounded like me and she knows where my thoughts are... she said if things continued she might have to... we are all friends and i don't see the point in arguing. they can't change my mind and i can't change thiers!!!

They are called sheeple... Most of them are. Some are actually very intelligent people who have a block that doesnt allow them to see reality.. Who quoted the phrase " Liberalism is a mental disorder"? I think it was Michael Savage. Its so so true.. Most stances they take make no sense for the followers. For the leaders, I would say, power, greed and gluteny are most of the reasons..
